The Issues Facing the HVAC Industry in 2022

Supply Chain Shortages

  • International shipments slowed significantly during the last year. Raw materials like steel, aluminum, copper, and plastics were challenging to obtain, slowing the manufacturing process of HVAC equipment.
  • Semiconductors, critical to electronics and electric appliances like air conditioners, were also in short supply. Next year, supply chain shortages may well continue to impact the industry.
  • These issues can be mitigated by keeping in contact with equipment suppliers. Knowing which suppliers have which items in stock and when they’re likely to run out will help you plan orders.
  • But, most HVAC companies can’t afford, either from a physical space standpoint or a monetary one, to have an entire warehouse of items just in case. So, organization and time management are key. It’s important for HVAC companies to have a good handle on the calendar.
  • Don’t get caught off guard by the arrival of cold weather—start planning for your inventory needs well in advance of winter. Follow up with your customers to book appointments in advance too—that way you’ll know exactly what’s needed and when.

Labour Shortages

  • With fewer and fewer young people pursuing the skilled trades, and instead opting for academic university degrees, there’s a labour shortage on the horizon. Students seeking apprenticeships are at their lowest point in almost a decade.
  • Labour will continue to be an issue in 2022 and beyond. The best way to prepare is to ensure your business is known as the industry’s best place to work. Today’s employees are seeking more than just a paycheck, so providing an attractive suite of benefits, both monetary and intangible, is key.
  • Thousands of tradespeople are set to retire soon, so get to work on your hiring pipeline now. Form relationships with trade schools, visit career fairs, and ensure your current team is inspired to sing your praises and refer to their friends.
